This season, Y-3 introduced the Kaiwa, the latest style to grace the brand’s storied roster of progressive, pioneering sneaker designs. Taking its aesthetic and functional cues from a high-performance running shoe, the Kaiwa pushes the Y-3 principle of ‘comfort through geometry’ into a bold new space. Sleek leather uppers are accented by a subtle suede heel and contrasting midsole, while distinct foam bubbles and a hardwearing rubber outsole wrap the foot in a hardwearing ode to maximalist nineties sneaker-design.

The ‘conversation’ that the shoe’s name alludes to not only speaks to the dialogue between adidas and Yohji Yamamoto, and the harmonious balancing act between Japanese design and sportswear functionality that they explore. The shoe also invites a new look at the ongoing conversation around street culture, craftsmanship and technology. This sense of a creative duel is further echoed in the two Kaiwa colorways: one, a minimalist black version that celebrates the core color that has always been at the heart of Y-3’s DNA; the other, a striking yellow version that echoes a key color from the F/W 18 apparel and accessories.
